Athletes Commission explores ways to support the national Olympic movement

The meeting aimed to enhance the skills and capabilities of members through ambitious programmes in line with global sporting trends

    The Athletes' Commission of the UAE National Olympic Committee discussed ways to improve athletes' overall performance, both technically and through educational and awareness programmes, given its key role in supporting the national Olympic movement and enhancing the skills and abilities of its members through ambitious programmes aligned with global sports trends, to cement the nation's standing in major international events.

    These discussions took place during the Athletes' Commission meeting held this morning, Thursday, via video conferencing, chaired by H.E. Faris Mohammed Al Mutawa, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Athletes' Commission. Attendees included Vice Chairman of the NOC Yousef Mirza Al Hammadi, and members Abdullah Al Marri, Omar Al Marzouqi, Saif Bin Futtais, Safia Al Saigh, Mohammed Al Nakhii, Mohammed Al Noubi Al Hammadi, Aisha Al Ali, and Saud Al Zaabi.


    The meeting commenced by expressing gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai and President of the National Olympic Committee, for his continuous support for the Olympic movement across various fields. His guidance to adopt ideas and practices that enhance the UAE’s presence in both sporting and Olympic competitions while promoting the values of friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect were emphasized as a constant approach for the nation's athletes.


    During the meeting, the Commission addressed several key topics on the agenda, including its future roles as regards the challenges faced by athletes in the country, and the development of solutions to ensure flexibility in sports competition and create a suitable environment for athletes to improve their performance and results. Additionally, mechanisms for scouting sports talents were discussed, along with exploring how to leverage the directives of His Highness the UAE President regarding the regulation governing residents, and UAE-born to broaden the competitive sports base and benefit from local talents.


    The meeting also included the distribution of roles and responsibilities among Commission members to ensure the effective implementation of the tasks outlined in its formation decree. Furthermore, the results of UAE athletes' participation in the Gulf, Asian, and Olympic Games were reviewed, and plans were developed to improve their performance in such events.


    H.E. Faris Mohammed Al Mutawa affirmed that the Athletes' Commission is always committed to standing by athletes and listening to their views and ideas regarding the future of the Olympic movement. He highlighted the importance of leveraging their experiences in establishing new structures to promote Olympic sports by opening communication channels with the Athletes' Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which plays a crucial role in representing the voice of athletes globally within and outside the IOC. He also underscored the importance of supporting this commission as part of the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations.


    Al Mutawa pointed out that the Athletes' Commission of the UAE National Olympic Committee is in the process of developing a series of plans and programmes to scout and nurture talents in line with the National Sports Strategy 2031. This strategy focuses on developing the abilities of sports talents and achieving success in elite professional sports. He also noted that the Commission includes former and current athletes who have had the honour of representing the UAE in major Olympic and continental events, excelling in advanced training and sports management programmes, which promises outstanding results from the Commission’s efforts to continuously support the nation's athletes.


    The Athletes' Commission is tasked with representing athletes within the UAE Olympic movement, providing all possible support to ensure their success both in and out of the sporting arena. The Commission also proposes initiatives that promote peace, friendship, solidarity, participation, fair competition, and mutual respect, while championing initiatives that support the national Olympic movement and enhance the UAE’s leadership and distinction in national and international sports competitions.
