The General Assembly of the UAE National Olympic Committee (NOC) agreed to postpone the elections of the President and Board Members of the NOC and extend the term of the current Board until after the end of Tokyo Olympic Games next year. The General Assembly also authorised the President of the NOC to revise and endorse the Olympic Charter.
This statement was released after an extraordinary General Assembly Meeting of the NOC chaired by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, President of the NOC held yesterday via video technology. Attendees included His Excellency Humaid Al Qattami, First Vice-President of the NOC and Chairman of the Executive Board; His Excellency Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Secretary-General of the NOC, in addition to all representatives of sports federations.
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed urged all sports federations to prepare well-rehearsed plans and programmes for the foreseeable future to shoulder the responsibility of representing the nation in style in big sporting events. He called upon them to capitalise on the current circumstances, where major sporting events are suspended/postponed, to make better technical and physical preparations such that they can turn those efforts into decent results befitting the profile of the UAE sports.
The President of the NOC paid tribute to the efforts of all sports federations which have come up with innovative means in the interest of athletes, be it from a training, technical or physical perspectives. Such initiatives had the flexibility to cope with the successive developments witnessed by the sports movement, and at the same time comply with the precautionary measures to ensure the safety of our boys and girls in various sports.
He directed the NOC to ensure the fruition of such initiatives and ideas towards nurturing a perfect environment for athletes to deliver the best results. Those initiatives would diffuse the culture of the sports practice and the Olympic movement amongst the community. They would also reflect the principles of tolerance, love, peace and fraternity inherent in the UAE community.
