Eight educational zones are participating in the tournament: Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Eastern Sharjah. Two educational zones are absent from the competitions: Al Dhafra and Umm Al Quwain.
Each region has 8 players in boys’ events and 4 girls in the girl’s competitions. Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah are participating in girls’ competitions only.
Al-Hudaybiyah Hall will host archery boys and girls competitions. The rest of the competitions will be held tomorrow in the girls’ competition. 75 boys are participating from five educational zones: Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Eastern Sharjah. 120 girls are representing 8 regions Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah, Eastern Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Al Fujairah. Al Dhafra and Ras Al Khaimah were absent from the competition.
Khalifa Ahmed from the National Union School of Abu Dhabi won the gold medal in under 53kg weight in the Taekwondo after beating Rashid Mohammed from Sharjah in the final.
Khalifa accepted the challenge of participating in taekwondo, despite his impaired vision. Referees do not allow athletes to wear glasses during matches as they pose risks to both the player and the opponent. Khalifa elected to enter the challenge without glasses in three matches. Accepting the challenge was the underlying factor of making his way to the final and the podium.
Khalid bin Abdat al-Kathiri, a Taekwondo coach in Abu Dhabi Educational Zone, said Khalifa was awarded the gold medal despite the challenge of his vision and was a model of determination.
After he became involved and motivated by his parents, he loved the game. “Taekwondo is a game that improves the performance of the practitioner and is good for oneself. I will continue my career with the school Olympics in the upcoming editions. My ambition is to represent the UAE in championships. Following my retirement, my career ambition will be to train UAE Taekwondo Team,” he said.
