Abu Dhabi Educational Zone clinches top honours in 7th School Olympics

Abu Dhabi Educational Zone emerged the winner of the overall title of the 7th School Olympics held from 20 April to 4 May in Dubai. The event attracted the participation of 2074 students who competed in seven games namely: badminton, swimming, athletics, judo, taekwondo, archery and fencing.

The Abu Dhabi Educational Zone clinched 111 medals, including 40 gold, 41 silver and 30 bronze. Dubai came second with 91 medals including 38 gold, 25 silver and 28 bronze. Eastern Sharjah ranked third with 72 medals, 24 gold, 14 silver, 34 bronze. Al Ain was fourth with 75 medals, 21 gold, 31 silver and 23 bronze.

Sharjah Educational Zone was fifth with 56 medals, 16 gold, 18 silver and 22 bronze, Ajman ranked sixth with 42 medals, including 15 gold, 8 silver, 19 bronze. Fujairah was seventh with 66 medals including 10 gold, 25 silver and 31 bronze, and Ras Al Khaimah was eighth with 18 medals, including 4 golds, 3 silver, 11 bronze. Umm al-Quwain came ninth with 15 medals, including 3 gold and 12 bronze and Dhafra was placed tenth with 8 medals, including 2 silver and 6 bronze.

In the archery events for girls, Al Ain scored 6 medals to lead the medal tally. Abu Dhabi came in second place with 6 medals, Dubai third with 5 medals and Umm Al Quwain fourth with one medal.

In the 13-year-old singles category, Reem Ali Marzouq of Salama Bint Butti School at Al Ain won the gold medal, and in Under-15-year-old category, Amira Mubarak from Salama Bint Butti School at Al Ain was awarded the gold medal. Maryam Mohammed Al Nahari, from Al Mawaheb Secondary School in Abu Dhabi, won the U-17 category and was crowned with the gold medal.

In the teams events, Al Ain won the gold medal for under-13 teams. In under-15 years for teams, Al Ain won the first place.




In the fencing for children, Dubai Educational Zone won the gold medal by student Abdul Rahman Omar from the School of modern skills. Dubai Educational Zone continued to excel in the category of children and was awarded the gold medal through student Abdullah Ali from the School of Modern Skills.



H.E Humaid Al Qatami, Senior Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee, Chairman of the Executive Office, paid tribute to the remarkable form seen in the seventh edition of the School Olympics Programme, which concluded a couple of days ago. He stressed that the performances of students in the games cast light upon the useful impact of the programme in delivering potential super athletes in the future.

Al Qatami was also impressed by the notable performances of students in fencing competitions, which was held at Asma Bint Al Numan sports hall in Dubai and presented awards to the winners.

“The NOC is pleased by the achievements of the programme in every year, thanks to the support of H.H Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the National Olympic Committee, Chairman of the Supreme Committee of the Programme, who had provided the success ingredients of shaping future champs,” he added.

“I call upon all the concerned federations to work closely with the NOC and the Ministry of Education in developing a technical training track for the outstanding students, which will help them to develop their skills further and gain more experiences to the level enabling them to participate in the international events and the Olympic Games, and accordingly achieve awards that will raise the profile of the UAE.

“The summer training camps for outstanding students will continue to take place in France and Italy in July. Players will compete with their counterpart in international schools in these counties to gain more experience.

“Many congratulations to all schools, educational zones, and winners for their remarkable performances in the School Olympics Programme and may I wish them all the best in their sporting career. I would also like to thank Dubai Educational Zone, for hosting the seventh edition of the programme very successfully. Thanks also go to administrative and technical staffs and organising committees who all took care of students and contributed to the success of the Programme,” concluded Al Qatami.



“The School Olympics Programme shows how it is successful in every edition, and it is nice to see our sons and daughters on the winning podiums. The students had benefited greatly from the Fencing competitions, and today our children are achieving great results in the international tournaments. The School Olympics Programme hosts many students who have unique skills, which will bring numerous benefits to Fencing and the sports in UAE in general,” said Mohammed Al Mansouri, Member of the Board of Directors of the Fencing Federation.

Abdullah Ali and Abdul Rahman Omar, who won boys’ fencing gold medals from Modern Skills Schools in Dubai were pleased with the result and dedicated the achievement to themselves. They explained that they had full determination to reach the podium and thanked their coach Shadi Ramadan Mohammed for preparing and encouraging them to win the gold.

Coach Shad praised the achievements of both players and their persistence to excel. He anticipated a bright future for them.
